Risperdal also made news in regards to Johnson & Johnson's recent settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, which resulted in the company's payment of $2.2 million in civil and criminal charges involving Risperdal and certain other medications. After a decade-long investigation into Johnson & Johnson's practices, the federal government accused the pharmaceutical giant of marketing Risperdal to elderly patients with dementia and children. The agreement was reached in November 2013.

Coinciding with this Risperdal settlement, Consumer Reports published the findings of research the following month that showed a three-fold increase in the number of children treated with anti-psychotic medications over the past 15 years An investigation led by the consumer watchdog group also found that many of the scripts written for Risperdal and other drugs are not for schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, but in the treatment of behavioral problems in children, a use not approved by the FDA.
