New SAE International Book Delves Into Analysis and Control System Design of Automatic Transmissions

WARRENDALE, Pa., Jan. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- While the basic working principle and the mechanical construction of automatic transmissions in vehicles has not changed significantly, increased requirements for performance, fuel economy, and drivability, as well as the increasing number of gears has made it more challenging to design the systems that control modern automatic transmissions. Dr. Bai earned his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technologies, China, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Hokkaido University, Japan, both in the field of Automatic Controls. In his 23 years with GM Powertrain, he extensively worked on advanced development of automatic transmissions. Bai is also an adjunct faculty member in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. He is the author of 30 technical publications and 35 patents.

Mr. Maguire received his undergraduate BSME degree from Michigan Technological University with an emphasis on design. He earned a graduate degree from Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy New York. He began his automotive career in 1985 at General Motors Engineering Staff as an Associate Engineer, and currently is the Global Innovation Leader in GM Powertrain's Advanced Hybrid Group.

Dr. Peng received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests include adaptive control and optimal control, with emphasis on their applications to vehicular and transportation systems. Dr. Peng's current research focuses include design and control of hybrid vehicles and vehicle active safety systems. He has more than 200 technical publications, including 85 in referred journals and transactions, and three books.
