"The grants awarded by the IICF demonstrate the philanthropic commitment of our industry. As a result of the collective efforts of insurers, we are proud to award funds to non-profits that are providing vital services and meeting specific needs in the communities where we live and work. Through industry collaboration, we are better able to expand our impact and reach," said Mark El-Tawil, Regional CEO, West Region, Humana Inc. and 2011-2012 IICF Grants Committee Chair.
The IICF is committed to helping communities and enriching lives at the local level. The Western Division focuses grant making in four areas: Child Abuse Prevention, Education & Awareness; Disaster Preparedness & Response; Education & Literacy; and Health & Human Services.
Among the 2012 grant recipients is the Alameda County Community Food Bank which will receive funds for their Children's BackPack Program. Through the program, bags of nutritious food are provided to children to take home over the weekend, when school provided meals are not available. The IICF grant will provide nutritional support to approximately 100 children.
"The IICF grant is vital to our efforts to help our neighbors in need – and the timing couldn't be better. At our member food pantries, lines are getting longer. Each month, hundreds of families contact our helpline asking for help for the very first time," said Suzan Bateson, the Food Bank's executive director. "Together, we are responding to a growing need. And we must. The food we provide helps our most vulnerable residents – two thirds of them children and seniors."
The IICF is a national organization operating in the Western United States, the New York-Tristate region and the Midwest. To date, the IICF has provided over $17 million and 155,000 volunteer hours to hundreds of nonprofits across the nation.
