Nutrition App The Eatery Records 2 Million Crowd-Sourced Food Ratings
3 weeks after its release, the iPhone app has seen rapid growth of its food-rating community
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Massive Health, the company behind new nutrition app The Eatery, announced today that within three weeks of launch, the app's users have already contributed two million food ratings.

The Eatery harnesses the power of crowdsourcing to provide nutritional feedback on people's meals. Before eating, people using the app simply take a photo of their food, which is then rated by other app users.
"We're excited to see people helping each other get healthy. They're sharing the app and using it to encourage their family and friends. The more engaged people are, the more valuable the experience becomes for everyone" says Sutha Kamal, CEO and co-founder of Massive Health.
Such a high level of activity has also provided the company with a wealth of data about people's real-time eating habits. For instance, the app records where people eat the most and least healthy meals, and what times they are most likely to eat well or poorly. This information, spread across the Eatery's global user base, will provide new insights into how different people eat.
Massive Heath has already begun to analyze these trends and found that:
- In New York City, people eat the worst in the Financial District, and as they move uptown, their eating habits get better.
- In Europe, the worst clusters of unhealthy eating tend to be in the United Kingdom and the healthiest eating tends to be in Spain
- Willpower to eat healthy deteriorates as they day progresses. People start off eating well at breakfast, and begin losing self-control at lunch and in the afternoon.
"So often, we don't pay attention to what we eat. When we do, we lead healthier lives. Normally that's hard. But with The Eatery, people have weighed in on other's meals over 2 million times," says Aza Raskin, co-founder of Massive Health.
The Eatery was listed by PC World Magazine as a "Best Free iPhone App" of 2011, and is described as "Addictive and Effective" by TheNextWeb. The press kit is available online.
