Obscura Digital Delivers Message to the World by Transforming Architectural Landmark for Code REDD at Rio+20

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Obscura Digital, the San Francisco based visualization company, teamed up with Wildlife Works to deliver a critical message about our planet by creating a large-scale architectural projection experience for the global launch of the Code REDD Campaign. On the eve of Rio+20, the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio's historic architectural landmark Arcos da Lapa became a storytelling canvas, revealing the devastating effects of deforestation through a show of sound and light, followed by the premier of the Code REDD Campaign film, showcasing a scalable solution to save the threatened forests of the world. The Campaign aims to catalyze verified REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) credits from the private sector within the voluntary carbon market.

Obscura Digital has illuminated iconic architectural landmarks around the globe with their art and technology spectacles, from the Opera House in Sydney to the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, and places in between. This is the first time Obscura's team created a show in Brazil; they came armed with the power to transform a public historic location in Rio into a large scale messaging platform with visualizations that focus people's attention on the pressing need to interject forest protection as part of the dialogue on sustainable development at Rio+20.

The Lapa Arches (Arcos da Lapa), an 18th century aqueduct that is one of the main symbols of Rio, was painted with vibrant tropical forest landscapes, enshrouded by intertwining vines, covered with grinding blades of a wood mill, engulfed in flames, and then, the arches came crumbling down into ruins, all in sync with a soundscape.

From the ruins, a short film by award-winning Brazilian filmmaker Jarbas Agnelli was unveiled across the arches by Obscura Digital, with a scarlet macaw that rises from the ashes, bringing forth the launch of the Code REDD Campaign. The film tells the story of the global problem of deforestation and the new solution: Code REDD. Obscura previously collaborated with Agnelli when they projected his short film "Birds on the Wires" at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.

The Campaign launch event culminated when a red force field, spanning the 17.6 metres height of the aqueduct, formed a protective mesh over the forests while the high-spirited international audience in Lapa followed the prompt www.coderedd.com/glow to raise their phones, glowing red, and raise their voice in support of Code REDD.

Obscura Digital collaborated with Millennium ART on the communication strategy for the Code REDD Campaign launch; the organizations previously collaborated on the highly acclaimed "CO2 Cube" in Copenhagen for the COP15 UN Climate Change Conference.
