September Is National Youth Court Month--Youth courts play an important role in our juvenile justice system. In these special courts, which may be called different names—youth court, teen court, or peer court—young offenders are held accountable, taught about the legal and judicial systems, and empowered to be active in their communities. OJP's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), in partnership with the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS), has prepared a summary of links and other resources about youth courts as part of its observance of the month. www.ncjrs.gov/youthcourts/
Current JAG Recovery Act Awards—As of September 2, OJP has awarded more than
$2.9 million in grant funding to 116 local governments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's local Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program. "This funding will play an important role in helping local communities fight crime and build safer communities," said Laurie O. Robinson, OJP's Assistant Attorney General. A total of 3,416 units of local government are eligible for a direct JAG Recovery Act award. The list of the awards is updated daily on OJP's Web site.

Saturday, September 25, Nationwide Prescription Drug "Take-Back" Day--"Prescription drug abuse and diversion—often facilitated by 'left-over' prescriptions being stored in our own homes—is having a devastating effect on our families and on our communities," said James H. Burch, II, acting director, OJP's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). Across the country on Saturday, September 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (local time), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will have "Take-Back" initiative collection sites in place so individuals can drop off expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. The drugs will then be disposed of safely. Other participants in the "Take-Back" initiative include the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Association of Attorneys General, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, the Federation of State Medical Boards, and the National District Attorneys Association.
