New Performance Standard Announced For Hazardous Materials Protective Suits—The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) today announced a new performance standard for protective suits used by law enforcement when dealing with hazardous materials. The new standard sets requirements for performance levels intended to protect officers against chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological (CBNR) hazards. CBNR hazards include chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals, biological agents and radiological and nuclear particulate hazards that may inflict bodily harm, incapacitation or death. http://ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/nij/221916.pdf
BJS Study Analyzes Victimization Rates Among Those With Disabilities—The rate of nonfatal violent crime against people with disabilities (40 per 1,000 persons age 12 or older, after adjusting for age, was about twice the rate of those without disabilities (21 per 1,000) according to Crime Against People with Disabilities, 2008 (NCJ 231328) released this week by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Nearly 730,000 nonfatal violent crimes and about 1.8 million property crimes were experienced by people age 12 or older with a disability in 2008. The violent crimes against people with disabilities included 40,000 rapes or sexual assaults, 116,000 robberies, 115,000 aggravated assaults and nearly 459,000 simple assaults. http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov.
Findings of Youth in Residential Placement Survey Published—The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) released, Youth's Characteristics and Backgrounds, the fourth bulletin in a series that presents findings from the Survey of Youth in Residential Placement (SYRP). The bulletin focuses on the youth's demographic characteristics, current and prior offenses, current disposition, family and educational backgrounds, and expectations for the future.
