I dag ble Elbphilharmonie Hamburg åpnet med en høytidelig seremoni og den første konserten. Den er det nye hjertet til Nord-Tysklands musikkmetropol. Med sin arkitektur og sitt program forener det spektakulære konserthuset kunstnerisk perfeksjon med maksimal åpenhet. Utformet av arkitekturbyrået Herzog & de Meuron og med en eksponert beliggenhet mellom by og havn, forbinder Elbphilharmonie et forhenværende lagerhus med et nytt glass påbygg med buet taklandskap. I tillegg til tre konsertsaler inneholder bygningen bl.a. et hotell og en offentlig tilgjengelig utsiktsplattform som understreker Hamburgs nye landemerke som «et hus for alle».

Den høytidelige åpningen ble innledet i storsalen med en offisiell seremoni. Det ble holdt taler av forbundspresident Joachim Gauck, Hamburgs første borgermester Olaf Scholz, Jacques Herzog fra arkitekturbyrået Herzog & de Meuron og generalintendant Christoph Lieben-Seutter. Blant gjestene var den tyske forbundskansleren Angela Merkel og en rekke høytstående gjester fra politikk og kultur.

I storsalen spilte NDR Elbphilharmonie orkesteret under sin sjefdirigent Thomas Hengelbrock med koret fra Bayerischen Rundfunk og kjente gjestesolister, som Philippe Jaroussky (kontertenor), Hanna-Elisabeth Müller (sopran), Wiebke Lehmkuhl (mezzosopran), Pavol Breslik (tenor) og Bryn Terfel (bassbaryton).

Et av høydepunktene var uroppførelsen av et nykomponert stykke som den tyske samtidskomponisten Wolfgang Rihm hadde skrevet spesielt for denne anledningen: «Reminisens. Triptykon og ord in memoriam Hans Henny Jahnn for tenor og stort orkester». Deretter spilte orkesteret en rikholdig variasjon av komposisjoner fra flere århundrer som gav et første overveldende inntrykk av den fenomenale akustikken i storsalen, som den japanske star-akustiker Yasuhisa Toyota er ansvarlig for. Konsertkvelden nådde sitt høydepunkt med sluttsatsen av Beethovens 9. symfoni, og stemningen i det nye konserthuset under åpningen ble gjenspeilet av sluttkoret «Freude schöner Götterfunken» på en uovertreffelig måte.

Under konserten ble fasaden til Elbphilharmonie til en projeksjonsflate for en unik lyspresentasjon. Musikken som spilte i storsalen, ble umiddelbart omgjort til farger og former som ble projektert på bygningen.
