Outstanding Wenonah High School Athlete Earns a $2,000 Scholarship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Oct. 12, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- With college costs continuing to soar faster than the rate of inflation, today's students carry a greater financial burden than ever before. Local Birmingham law firm, Bond & Botes, P.C., has founded the annual Financial Hardship Scholarship in an effort to prevent local students from being buried in debt. This year, Wenonah High School alumni, Telvin Miller, has been awarded the $2,000 scholarship to be paid towards his education at the University of South Alabama. Bond & Botes, P.C. will be hosting Telvin in the firm's Birmingham office on October 12 at 3pm to present him with the $2,000 check.

Telvin sacrificed his high school social life to spend time raising his younger siblings, completing school work, working a part-time job, and leading the Wenonah football team to the 5A State Championship game as team captain. In his role as captain of the varsity team, Telvin rushed over 1,100 yards, scored 10 touchdowns, and made 11.5 tackles for loss in addition to 42 solo tackles. However, Mr. Miller excelled in the classroom just as much as on the football field. He routinely competed in math tournaments for eight years and graduated within the top 10 of his high school class.

Head coach Fred Yancey of the rival Briarwood Christian High School team shared his thoughts on Telvin's scholarship award: "As the coach of Briarwood Christian School, it is always encouraging to see young men excel on the football field through hard work and great effort.  Last season, Telvin Miller stood out as a player playing with purpose.  He led his team to the State Championship game.  It is even more encouraging to know that a fine athlete also values a great education and is willing to make it happen with the same hard work and great effort that he poured into his football team."

Telvin's leadership, athleticism, intelligence, and drive made him an exceptional candidate.
