Owens Corning to Present Nine Sessions at Upcoming CAMX Show in Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Composites experts from Owens Corning (NYSE: OC), a leading global producer of glass fiber reinforcements for composite systems, will deliver nine technical presentations at CAMX, the Composites and Advanced Materials Expo to be held this week in Orlando. Additionally, the company's booth will feature products and solutions for a range of applications in the automotive, building and construction, and industrial sectors.
The presentations reflect Owens Corning's continuous innovation in processes and composite products supporting a wide range of applications.

Highlights of the presentations include:
- Boron-Free-E-CR-Glass-FRP Composites Outperforms Stainless Steels in Corrosive Environments. During this presentation, Amol Vaidya, senior engineer, global materials characterization and modeling, will share research findings that the company's Advantex® glass fiber reinforced polymer (E-CR-Glass) provides longer service life and cost savings in corrosive environments, compared to stainless steel and E-glass-based FRP. Corrosion is an economic and environmental issue the oil and gas industry has faced for years, typically addressed with high-cost metal alloys or various coating technologies. Glass fiber reinforced polymer composites can be an effective, low-cost alternative to these expensive alloys. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. ET.
- Advances in Fiberglass Properties for Wind Turbine Blades. Presented by Tom DeMint, global specification leader, renewable energy Europe wind energy, this paper will highlight advances in the material properties of glass fiber that make it possible for designers and engineers to create lighter, longer rotor blades. These blades can have improved aerodynamic performance with resistance to higher, long-term fatigue loads, ultimately enabling wind turbines to increase power yield and therefore reduce the cost of energy. - Transforming Residential Oil Tank Manufacturing with Preformed Reinforcements. Raymond Arai, operations leader, thermoset regional platform; and Brian Bower, area sales manager, composite solutions business, will conduct an educational session explaining this work, which highlights the benefits of a tough and invaluable environmental solution. A new grade of thermoformable CFM in a closed-mold manufacturing solution helped cut the weight of the tank by 50 percent compared to steel, leading to lower shipping costs and reduce risk of injury during installation. - Novel Glass Fiber for Epoxy-Based Sheet Molding Compounds (SMC) Allows Metal-Replacing Structural Composites. This technical paper, presented by Hans Van Der Steen, business development leader, structural composites, describes how the new epoxy-based SMC allows for glass fiber loading in excess of 60 percent, which directly leads to higher mechanical performances and reduced part weight compared to metals. This paper reviews the performance of Owens Corning's new glass fiber multi-end rovings, and highlights the benefits this solution brings to the automotive industry. Thursday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. ET.
- Long Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastics: Enabling Economical Vehicle Light Weighting Through New Glass Reinforcement Solutions. Corey Melvin, DUCS technical process leader, thermoplastics platform, will describe a newly developed glass fiber that enables higher glass loadings, paving the way for new applications requiring greater performance levels. This new premier glass reinforcement helps not only to meet short-term demand for LFT PP by increasing the production capacity of existing compounding assets, but also helps promote long-term growth in demand for LFT PP by providing a new level of end-use performance. Thursday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. ET.
