PCL Construction Earns National Recognition for LEGOLAND® Restoration
ORLANDO, FL., Sept. 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - PCL Construction Services, Inc. has won the Design-Build Institute of America's (DBIA) National Award in the Rehabilitation/Renovation/Restoration category for its construction services on LEGOLAND® Florida , located in Winter Haven, Florida.
"The commitment and dedication of the PCL project team on LEGOLAND® Florida was unparalleled," said Billy Matthesen, PCL project manager. "The combined efforts of our team and our partners allowed us to do the monumental amount of work that needed to be put in place in such a short time frame."
Merlin Entertainments, global visitor attraction operator and the owners of the LEGOLAND Parks, and Morris Architects worked with PCL to deliver the project faster and at a lower cost than any previous LEGOLAND project worldwide.
"PCL demonstrated their expert knowledge and consistently provided the project team with the innovative problem solving and cost effective solutions while maintaining the high standard of design that is so integral to the LEGOLAND brand," said Michael Frohnappel, AIA, and Associate Principal of Morris Architects.
The entire project was completed in 15 months. The LEGOLAND Florida theme park work included more than 50 rides, shows, and attractions. The LEGO models were constructed overseas by Merlin's Magic Making team and brought in to Florida. The on-site work involved 23 existing structural renovations, new infrastructure installation, existing infrastructure upgrades, and the installation of extensive hardscape, landscape, and historic tree relocation and restoration.
The selection process for the awards involved numerous criteria including best practices, sustainability, schedule and cost performance, and value added distinctiveness. According to DBIA, this year's awards competition received a record number of project submissions in the Rehabilitation/Renovation and Restoration category.
"PCL went above and beyond the baseline requirements of this award," Susan Hines, director of public relations for DBIA said. "This was a truly impressive project."
In addition to the DBIA award, the project received the Friends of our Urban Forest "2011 Outstanding Project" award for saving over 640 historic trees from the former Cypress Gardens or relocated them onsite to become part of the new LEGOLAND Florida Park. Any trees not relocated were 100% recycled for mulch throughout the LEGOLAND Park.
