ANNVILLE, Pa., May 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With Memorial Day just around the corner, Governor Tom Wolf made a visit to veterans at the Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home (PSSH) in Erie, PA on Wednesday. The PSSH is the oldest of the six veterans' homes in the Commonwealth and is operated by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
"Memorial Day is certainly a time to remember those who have fallen in service, but it is also important to acknowledge their comrades who have survived and can share their legacy," said Gov. Wolf. "I met a number of men and women who epitomize bravery, commitment and patriotism. They are true American heroes."
In addition to touring the historic home, which opened in 1886, Governor Wolf also visited the Veterans Memorial Cemetery on the grounds behind the home, and paid his respects to the 1,100 veterans from various conflicts who are buried there.
"The residents were absolutely thrilled that the governor took the time to sit with them and listen to their stories," said Deb Raymond, PSSH commandant. "They love to talk about their service, and I could tell that chatting with the governor was a special experience for our residents."
The Commonwealth's six veterans' homes serve more than 1,500 eligible veterans and their spouses. They include the Delaware Valley Veterans' Home in Philadelphia, the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center in Scranton, the Hollidaysburg Veterans' Home in Hollidaysburg, the Pennsylvania Soldiers' and Sailors' Home in Erie, the Southeastern Veterans' Center in Spring City and the Southwestern Veterans' Center in Pittsburgh.
