Columbus, OH

Columbus claimed the top spot in this year's rankings, outpacing larger metros like Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. It's a reminder that brake wear isn't just a function of population or traffic volume; it's shaped by how people actually drive day to day. Columbus drivers may be hitting the brakes more often, and harder, than drivers in bigger cities with more consistent highway commutes. Columbus wasn't alone either: Ohio placed five metro areas in the top 25 overall, more than any other state, making it the clear standout.

Seattle, WA

Seattle landed at No. 2, and several regional factors may help explain why. Steep hills mean brakes work overtime just holding a vehicle steady, let alone stopping it, while frequent rain may add another layer of strain as tires work to maintain traction on wet roads. Combined with some of the more congested commuter traffic in the country, these conditions may contribute to faster brake wear than in flatter, drier markets.

Albany, NY

Albany's appearance in the top five points to a pattern seen across several Northeast markets in this year's report. Cold winters bring snow, ice, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles, conditions that can be tough on roads and may also affect brake components. Drivers in these regions tend to brake more cautiously and more frequently in slippery conditions, and road salt and moisture may accelerate corrosion on rotors and calipers over time. Given those conditions, routine brake inspections are especially important for Albany drivers.

The Midwest commuter Belt – Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis

Beyond Ohio, the Midwest showed up repeatedly in the rankings, with Indianapolis, Chicago, Detroit, and Minneapolis all landing in the top 15. These cities share a common thread: sprawling suburban layouts, heavy commuter traffic and a reliance on surface streets and arterial roads rather than consistent highway driving. That combination means more stopping, starting, and idling in traffic, all of which puts extra strain on brake pads, rotors and calipers over time. Taken together, the pattern suggests brake wear across the Midwest isn't isolated to one city or one set of driving conditions; it may reflect a broader regional trend tied to how millions of commuters navigate their daily routines.
