Pew Praises Countries' Bold Commitments to Protect Coastal Wetlands Under Paris Agreement

GLASGOW, Scotland, Nov. 5, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pew Charitable Trusts today applauded several nations for including ambitious targets to protect and restore coastal wetlands in their updated nationally determined contributions (NDCs).

Parties to the Paris Agreement are increasingly recognizing the role that coastal "blue carbon" habitats can play in both mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change. Coastal wetlands—namely, mangrove, seagrass, and salt marsh ecosystems—are a "triple win" for combatting climate change: They store carbon, lessen the impacts of severe storms and sea level rise, and increase resilience among people and biodiversity in a changing climate.

Yet despite their importance, half of the world's coastal wetlands have been lost in the past century.

Belize, Costa Rica, and Seychelles have put forth ambitious protection targets for these valuable ecosystems within their updated NDCs:

• Belize will double existing mangrove protection by safeguarding 12,000 new hectares by 2030; restore an additional 4,000 hectares; and develop a National Seagrass Policy to help end the net loss of wetlands by 2025.
• Costa Rica will protect all its coastal wetlands recorded in the national inventory, restore priority mangrove areas, and develop a national mangrove restoration target by 2025. The country will also create new financing models to support implementation.
• Seychelles will map the full spatial extent and carbon stocks of its seagrass ecosystems using cutting-edge technologies and locally led field validation, as well as protect all its seagrass and mangrove ecosystems by 2030.

These countries, along with others—including Chile, Liberia, Panama, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka—have recognized the power of coastal wetlands as nature-based solutions in their NDCs.
