Phoenicia Specialty Foods Opening Second International Food Market in November
Local, family-owned company expands to downtown Houston
HOUSTON, Oct. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Family-owned and operated Phoenicia Specialty Foods, Houston's premier international food market, will open the doors to its new downtown location in November 2011. Phoenicia Specialty Foods downtown is located at 1001 Austin Street in the One Park Place luxury high-rise, next to Discovery Green Park.
Phoenicia Specialty Foods Downtown is a 28,000 square foot, state-of-the-art food market featuring more than 10,000 products imported from more than 50 countries. The one-stop, gourmet shop offers downtown dwellers and visitors quality culinary products and household basics at down-to-earth prices. Because of its buying power, generated by its large retail and wholesale operations, Phoenicia is able to pass economies of scale on to its customers.
Phoenicia will offer prepared foods, catering services, and delivery to accommodate people who live and work downtown. Free parking will be available for Phoenicia customers.
"It's amazing to see how much downtown Houston has evolved over the past few years. We at Phoenicia are thrilled to contribute to its renewal and bring our international market to the heart of the city," said Haig Tcholakian, Phoenicia Specialty Foods co-owner.
The downtown Phoenicia will also feature MKT Bar, an in-house wine and beer bar serving unique international fare. The industrial chic space will seat up to 250 guests and be open until 2 a.m. on weekends. A gelato bar, gourmet sandwich station, salad bar, olive bar, demonstration kitchen, wine and cigar department, fine housewares section, full-service bakery and fresh baked pizza corner will also occupy the downtown market. A must-see attraction from Phoenicia's existing West Houston location, the new location will offer two 150-foot pita bread conveyor belts that will transport freshly baked pita bread and artisan flat breads from the market's mezzanine bakery to customers below. Customers who long for foods from foreign lands are delighted to find many of these unique items at Phoenicia, created by chefs hailing from Europe to the Middle East to Latin America.
Phoenicia Specialty Foods is locally owned and operated by the Tcholakian family. Phoenicia Specialty Foods is a dream that started modestly 27 years ago. In 1983, Bob and Arpi Tcholakian, formerly of Lebanon and of Armenian descent, opened Phoenicia Deli, a 2,500 square foot, Mediterranean-style delicatessen. In 1992, Phoenicia Deli rented out additional space to store the many imported goods they were receiving. Soon, retail and wholesale customers started visiting the storage space to purchase a case of their desired, hard-to-find specialty items, and eventually this grocery section became a specialty foods market. In 2006, the family further branched out and opened Phoenicia Specialty Foods, a 55,000 square foot international food market across the street from the deli. The enterprise now is expanding into the center of downtown Houston.
"I am proud to provide the tasty and quality foods my family grew up with as staples in our household to the diverse international community of Houston, for life's everyday celebrations," said Phoenicia Founder, Zohrab "Bob" Tcholakian.
