Plumbing Expert Phil Sturges of Catalina Foothills Compares Water Heater Options for HelloNation

CATALINA FOOTHILLS, Ariz., Oct. 26, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- How can homeowners decide between a tank water heater and a tankless water heater? That's the key question answered in a HelloNation article featuring insights from Phil Sturges, Plumbing Expert and owner of PlumbZona Plumbing in Catalina Foothills, Arizona. The article walks readers through the pros and cons of each system, focusing on how household needs and infrastructure influence the best choice.

In the HelloNation feature, Sturges explains that tank water heaters operate by storing a set amount of hot water—typically between 40 and 80 gallons—which is kept heated and ready for use throughout the day. These systems are often better suited for homes with steady hot water demand, especially larger households that use multiple fixtures at once.

On the other hand, tankless water heaters heat water on demand as it flows through the unit. This approach eliminates the wait for a tank to refill and allows for uninterrupted hot water during longer showers or back-to-back use. However, the article points out that tankless systems depend on correct sizing and adequate utility supply. Homes without upgraded gas lines or higher electrical capacity may face higher installation costs or reduced performance.

The article emphasizes that home infrastructure should be evaluated before selecting a system. A home built with tank systems in mind may not be immediately compatible with a tankless upgrade without additional work. Plumbing Expert Phil Sturges underscores that understanding the limitations of existing home plumbing systems is key to avoiding unexpected installation issues.

Energy efficiency is another factor covered in the article. Tankless water heaters often use less energy overall, since they don't continuously heat stored water. This can be especially beneficial in smaller homes or those with lower hot water demand. Still, tank water heaters usually have lower upfront costs and simpler maintenance requirements, which can be appealing to budget-conscious homeowners.

Tucson water hardness plays a major role in system longevity. The HelloNation article explains how hard water contributes to mineral buildup in both types of water heaters. Tank systems tend to accumulate sediment at the bottom of the tank, while tankless units may experience scale buildup in heat exchangers. Regardless of system type, regular water heater maintenance is essential to prevent long-term performance issues.

Maintenance routines differ slightly. Tank heaters require periodic flushing to remove sediment, while tankless systems need professional descaling to clear scale buildup. Sturges notes that skipping maintenance—regardless of the system—shortens the lifespan and increases the risk of breakdowns.

The article also encourages readers to consider their daily routines. For homes with predictable, shared usage patterns, a tank water heater may provide adequate service with minimal changes. In contrast, households that prioritize long showers or have staggered hot water needs may find that a tankless water heater offers greater flexibility.

Ultimately, the HelloNation article stresses that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Choosing between a tank water heater and a tankless water heater depends on evaluating hot water demand, energy efficiency goals, utility capacity, and the effects of Tucson water hardness. Sturges encourages homeowners to think beyond the technology itself and consider how well each option matches their home and lifestyle.
