PLUMgrid Expands LBaaS with ADC Leader F5 Networks to Address Growing Microservices in OpenStack Clouds

New Open Networking Suite (ONS) Offers Tunnel Heatmap, Superior High Availability and Support for Leading OpenStack Distributions

Sep 29, 2015, 09:00 ET from PLUMgrid

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- PLUMgrid, a leader in secure and scalable software-defined networking (SDN) for OpenStack®  clouds, today announced the latest version of PLUMgrid Open Networking Suite (ONS) for OpenStack with support for multiple OpenStack distributions, Load Balancing as a Service (LBaaS) plugins, superior high availability, and dynamic Tunnel Heatmap.

As the most integrated SDN in the industry, PLUMgrid ONS offers the broadest support for OpenStack distros and installers including Huawei Compass, Mirantis OpenStack, Rackspace Private Cloud, RDO, Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and Ubuntu OpenStack. The newest release, PLUMgrid ONS 4.0, has also achieved Red Hat certification with Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 7.

PLUMgrid ONS is built on a fully programmable, distributed data plane with IO Visor technology, which delivers flexibility and performance through dynamic in-kernel IO technology. Deployed in multi-tenant data centers, PLUMgrid ONS enables micro-segmentation for OpenStack clouds via private Virtual Domains that contain, secure, and enforce network policies for traffic separation and control.

OpenStack LBaaS for Microservices

With the growth of microservices in data centers, LBaaS demand is increasing to provide seamless application and workload performance to all tenants. Utilizing LBaaS extensions in the Neutron API, PLUMgrid and F5 Networks have validated interoperability between F5 BIG-IP® Application Delivery Controllers (ADCs) and ONS 4.0 to verify deployment scenarios for high availability with scale-out, scalable IP addressing, and real-time overlay tunnel status.

"Many of our customers deploy LBaaS in cloud data centers to deliver superior performance across applications and workloads," said Ranjeet Sonone, director of product management at F5 Networks. "Our solutions with ecosystem partners such as PLUMgrid enable customers to build an open, extensible cloud infrastructure for emerging microservices and provide an optimal solution for today and the future."

Superior High Availability and Scale-Out Neutron Performance

PLUMgrid ONS offers leading high availability with non-stop forwarding, auto recovery, and active/active/active redundancy for Neutron to ensure up time for mission-critical production deployments where downtime is not an option. Active/active/active redundancy mode for OpenStack Neutron provides uninterrupted Neutron API service in multiple failure scenarios. Since all three Neutron instances are active at all times, this also increases the Neutron API service performance and availability across all OpenStack controller nodes.

Dynamic Tunnel Heatmap for Real-Time Status

One of the challenges of virtual networks is having limited visibility into the virtual and physical layer. PLUMgrid ONS 4.0 introduces a visual, overlay Tunnel Heatmap which displays the real-time network status of the SDN overlay. It gives users a visual status of the overlay tunnels in the SDN layer plus the physical connectivity status between OpenStack compute nodes. The result is that cloud network operators can anticipate and quickly react to state changes of the OpenStack virtual and physical networks.

"Adding support for popular ADC options gives our customers proven, reliable choices for deploying LBaaS," said Wendy Cartee, VP of Product Management at PLUMgrid. "When you add this to other enhancements in ONS 4.0 including superior high availability, distributed metadata services, and Tunnel Heatmap, enterprises benefit by being able to meet the demands of large workloads and microservices simultaneously while delivering high performance."
