Preventable Last-Mile Logistics Errors Cost U.S. Health Systems Millions Annually, New Report Warns

ELMHURST, Ill., Oct. 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. health systems and labs are losing millions of dollars and compromising care delivery due to avoidable last-mile logistics delivery errors, including mishandled lab specimens, compromised pharmaceuticals, and delayed surgical supplies, according to a new white paper from global consulting firm L.E.K. Consulting and MedSpeed. The report reveals that failures in the final steps of delivering time-sensitive medical items can lead to costly and severe consequences.

Some key findings from the report include:

• $1 million is the average annual loss for midsized health systems due to mishandled specimens, such as lost biopsies, damaged blood samples, or improperly stored therapies.
• More than 50% of nurses reporting that medical courier errors delayed or canceled at least one procedure in the past year, with each event costing an average of $4,500.
• Errors with critical items such as temperature-controlled pharmaceuticals, surgical instruments, or sterile supplies can lead to patient safety risks, reputational harm, and legal exposure.

The report also identifies three tiers of costs resulting from medical courier errors:

1. Direct remediation which requires providers to redraw lab samples, replace supplies, or re-sterilize equipment. Specimen re-collection costs alone can range from $350 for a routine blood draw to $5,000 for an invasive surgical biopsy.
2. Clinical productivity loss resulting from idle operating room time, clinician downtime, or re-scheduling procedures.
3. Macro impact caused by reputational damage, patient attrition, or costly legal issues.

The report urges health systems and labs to reassess how they select and evaluate logistics providers revealing that top-performing providers can deliver error rates significantly below industry norms to unlock both patient care and financial benefits.
