Professional Insurance Agents to Hold PIA Advocacy Day March 31 - April 1
WASHINGTON, March 5, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the National Association of Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) will bring their concerns directly to Congress when they converge on Washington, D.C. for PIA Advocacy Day, March 31 – April 1, 2020.
The annual legislative fly-in (formerly called the PIA Federal Legislative Summit) is a gathering of PIA members from around the country who come together to meet with their members of Congress and advocate their positions on issues of importance to Professional Insurance Agents.
"In the past year, PIA's advocacy has achieved big wins in several areas," said PIA National Vice President of Government Relations Jon Gentile. "These have included protecting agent commissions for those who sell policies through the federal flood insurance and crop insurance programs; the permanent repeal of the Cadillac Tax, a 40 percent excise tax on employer-sponsored health plans; and passage and enactment of a long-term reauthorization of the terrorism risk insurance program (TRIA) for seven years."
"These successes included a major win for small-business insurance agencies and brokerages, who are now able to take full advantage of a passthrough tax deduction that was approved as part of the tax reform legislation signed into law in late 2017," Gentile added.
PIA's issues of primary focus for 2020 include crop insurance; flood insurance; cannabis safe harbor for independent agents; permanent tax relief for passthroughs; and repeal of the Federal Insurance Office (FIO).
PIA will also award its 2020 Legislator of the Year award to Congressman Alex X. Mooney (R-WV) during PIA Advocacy Day. Rep. Mooney is the main sponsor of legislation to repeal the Federal Insurance Office, long a top priority for PIA. PIA members will be advocating in support of Rep. Mooney's legislation during the fly-in.
The 2020 PIA Advocacy Day begins on the evening of March 31 at the Hilton Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia, PIA's headquarters hotel, with an in-depth issues briefing session and Q&A to prepare attendees for their congressional visits. The day ends with a reception for attendees. On April 1, PIA members will gather for a kickoff breakfast before going to Capitol Hill for a day of visits with their members of Congress.
The day ends with a reception on Capitol Hill.
"Our annual PIA Advocacy Day is a key opportunity for PIA members to solidify their relationships with members of Congress, in order to continue to advance our priority issues," said PIA National President Dennis Kuhnke of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
"PIA has a proud history of taking the strongest position to back independent agents, even if that means going at it alone," said PIA National CEO Mike Becker. "That kind of advocacy produces positive results for PIA members and for independent agents generally."
