EXPERT ALERTS:
Lufthansa Faces Astronomical Losses in France Disaster
Ron McCallum
Catastrophic Injury Lawyer, Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Instructor
Simon Greenstone Panatier Bartlett, PC, in Dallas
The horrifying audio of passengers screaming in terror minutes before the Germanwings crash in the French Alps last Tuesday raises the prospect of astronomical damages against Germanwings' parent company, Lufthansa, says Dallas aviation lawyer Ron McCallum. The company could face exposure in a variety of forums, including U.S. courts, because the dead included three American citizens. Furthermore, if initial reports that the co-pilot suffered from depression -- and that he concealed his condition from his employer -- prove to be true, the tragedy illustrates the more critical issue surrounding the extreme stress under which many pilots work and the emergent need for the airline industry to address those conditions. "Many a pilot has been able to re-establish his or her flight credentials after dealing with health issues, so the co-pilot's depression shouldn't have meant the end of his career. Tragically, he ignored his doctor's orders to stay home, and the consequences were nothing short of disastrous. The industry must find a way to address the crushing stress that many pilots experience and the toll it takes on a number of them."

Dollar-Cost Averaging a Good Strategy for Jittery Investors
Bijan Golkar, CFP®
CEO/Senior Advisor
FPC Investment Advisory, Inc.
"Dollar-cost averaging -- the practice of purchasing securities at fixed intervals and in equal amounts over time rather than in one lump sum -- has long been used as a way to avoid jumping into the market at the wrong time. One of the primary benefits of DCA is that it may reduce volatility when buying securities. Rather than risk a purchase price that's too high, DCA allows an investor to buy more shares when prices are low and fewer when they are high during a given time period. It also offers investors a system that avoids the challenge of market timing. Even though DCA may not always result in the highest long-term performance, it may be a good strategy for investors jittery about where the market is headed."
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Golkar has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, U.S. News & World Report, Yahoo Finance, The Fiscal Times, Bankrate, MoneyUnder30.com, MainStreet.com, InvestmentNews.com, Physician's Money Digest, and DepositAccounts.com.
