Breastfeeding is a sensitive and important topic that can unfortunately be a large source of stress for a new mother if their baby is having difficulty latching. According to the National Institutes of Health, breastfeeding provides protection for babies against common childhood infections, improves survival rates through their first year and may reduce the risk for certain diseases. However, many children have difficulty breastfeeding as a result of ankyloglossia, also known as tongue-tie. To date, the most common treatment of infant ankyloglossia is frenectomy, a surgical procedure to remove or loosen muscle tissue in the mouth. However, frenectomies can take two months to properly heal, and the process is painful for both the mother and baby. As a result, many parents are looking for an alternative way to deal with ankyloglossia. Says Dr. Low: "Dentists have the opportunity to play an important role in one of the most common causes of breastfeeding difficulties: ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie – a condition that traditionally gets treated by a surgical procedure that is painful for both baby and mom. Lasers are minimally-invasive and can be the answer to providing relief, reducing pain and minimizing recovery time."
Dr. Low is Professor Emeritus, University of Florida, College of Dentistry and Associate faculty member of the Pankey Institute, with 30 years of private practice experience in periodontics, lasers and implant placement. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and past President of the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Low provides dentists and dental hygienists the tools for successfully managing the periodontal patient in general and periodontal practices.
