EXPERT ALERTS:
Content Delivery Networks and the Internet of Things
Jon Alexander
Senior Director, Product Management (Media & Entertainment)
Level 3 Communications
"As the world of IoT continues to grow and evolve, the network component will remain a critical piece of the equation. Content delivery networks bring a wealth of benefits to IoT because they can offer better economies of scale, higher performance, more flexibility and agility, and more security. And that means more innovation, more actionable data, more efficiencies realized and much happier customers."
Alexander oversees Level 3 Communications' content delivery network and other media services, such as its Vyvx broadcast network. He is well-versed in OTT trends and technology, as well as IoT, security and large-scale, global broadcasting. He has written a number of articles, including "Five Critical Considerations When Choosing a Content Delivery Provider" (http://goo.gl/jhoCqp). He also has spoken on numerous industry panels and webinars.

Today's Government Technology Landscape
David Young
Regional Vice President, Government Markets Group
Level 3 Communications
"There is perhaps nothing more important in today's government technology landscape than the network. It enables a wealth of opportunities for governments to streamline operations and better serve their customers. From SDN to IoT to cloud to security, a strong network can bring about unprecedented collaboration and innovation -- all while creating more cost and time efficiencies."
For nearly 30 years, Young has worked with hundreds of government agencies to deliver a variety of telecommunications services, including Internet, VPN, voice, security, cloud and video services. He can speak to a wide array of topics related to government and networking, including IoT, SDN, security, cloud, BYOD/shadow IT, as well as working within government procurement cycles. He has written several articles, including: http://goo.gl/M2WkDr, http://goo.gl/d2u3kN and http://goo.gl/aPgYaz. He is based in Washington, D.C.

The Feasibility of 'Bumblebee-Based Connected Vehicles'
Alexander Wyglinski
Associate Professor, Faculty Advisor
Worcester Polytechnic Institute
"The future of real-time driverless cars operating on roads across the country will eventually depend on how well connected they are to each other using wireless communications. An increasing threat to automotive safety is vehicular hacking. As vehicles become more connected with each other and the environment around them, their vulnerability grows unless new approaches are found to secure them."
Based in Worcester, Mass., Wyglinski is associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, associate professor of robotics engineering, director of WPI's Wireless Innovation Laboratory, and faculty advisor to WPI's Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering society. He is also president-elect of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society. He is currently exploring how we can create better wireless networks for connecting vehicles (and, therefore, making driving safer) by studying how bumblebees make decisions as they forage.

Lavish Exec Spending Roils Veterans Charity
Joe Ahmad
Executive Employment Lawyer
Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing P.C.
Most people probably have seen the Wounded Warrior Project's powerful TV commercials featuring severely wounded veterans and the struggles their families face when they return home. The top two executives of the large veterans charity were fired recently amid a spending scandal that reportedly included fancy restaurants and first-class travel to luxury resorts for "team-building" conferences. Charity watchdogs say Wounded Warrior was spending about 40 percent of its funds on overhead. Says Ahmad: "As obvious as it seems, expense accounts are among the most common ways executives can get into trouble. Being a corporate or nonprofit leader comes with reasonable perks that are necessary and helpful to doing your job. But executives need to realize these funds are not for their personal use and enjoyment. This money is for the advancement of the company or institution. It is not a license to take money from the organization for personal enrichment. All it takes is a modicum of common sense."
