PSEG Partners with the NFL Environmental Program to Provide Green Energy for Super Bowl XLVIII

NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- PSEG announced today it is partnering with the NFL Environmental Program to provide the green power for Super Bowl XLVIII, the first Super Bowl held in the New York-New Jersey metro region.

For every megawatt hour of electricity used to power the event, PSEG will purchase and retire one renewable energy credit (REC) on behalf of Super Bowl XLVIII. This will include the electricity used at Met Life Stadium, the AFC and NFC team hotels and Super Bowl Boulevard –  the largest public event associated with the Super Bowl - located in Times Square (Broadway from 34^th to 47^th Streets) in New York City.

PSEG's REC purchase will include New Jersey solar renewable energy credits (SRECs) equal to a four week output of PSE&G's Kearny Solar Farm. Located near MetLife Stadium, the Kearny Solar Farm is a 3 megawatt-dc (MW-dc) farm that illustrates the Christie administration's effort to erect solar on undeveloped brownfields and landfills. The remaining RECs have been purchased from Community Energy Inc., a certified Green-e Supplier, sourced from the Jersey - Atlantic City Wind Farm, New Jersey's largest commercial grade wind farm.

PSEG, the parent company of PSE&G, is purchasing these RECs on behalf of Super Bowl XLVIII and the purchase will have no impact on New Jersey rate payers.

Since 1993, the National Football League has been developing projects at Super Bowl to address the environmental impacts of Super Bowl related events and activities. These projects have included comprehensive solid waste recycling at event facilities, recovery and donation of extra prepared food from Super Bowl events, donation and repurposing of construction and decor materials from Super Bowl venues, the "Super Kids-Super Sharing" book and sports equipment donation program, use of renewable energy at major NFL Super Bowl facilities, integration of bio-fuels into generators and transportation fleet vehicles, and support for urban forestry projects in every Super Bowl host community.
