PwC San Francisco Invests in Financial Literacy Education Programs with Local Organizations

SAN FRANCISCO, March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- PwC US today announced that its San Francisco office will donate $160,000 to three Bay Area-based non-profit organizations, funded through grants from the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. The grants also complement the professional services firm's Earn Your Future campaign dedicated to addressing youth education with a combination of donations and skills-based volunteer programs across the United States.

The cornerstone of the local initiative is a $100,000 grant over three years to Larkin Street Youth Services, a non-profit organization committed to helping homeless and at-risk youth to get off the street by offering them confidence, skills, and opportunities through housing, education, employment and health services. 

The grant will allow PwC to work with Larkin Street to develop, pilot and fully implement a financial literacy program for its youth. The initiative will effectively leverage PwC's financial literacy expertise to create a robust curriculum, train staff on its successful implementation and provide the longevity required to guarantee Larkin Street is providing the services necessary to help facilitate the youth's ultimate success.

As part of its financial literacy efforts in the market, PwC is also working with San Francisco Beacon Initiative and Faith Network of the East Bay on financial literacy programs, and each organization is receiving a $30,000 grant from the PwC Foundation.

San Francisco Beacon initiative is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming public schools into youth and family centers that act as beacons of activity for the surrounding neighborhoods and empower their communities. PwC will help design and implement a financial literacy curriculum aligned with the new Common Core Standards for Math to be piloted in two Beacon Centers this year with the plan to implement across all the remaining Beacon Sites. The donation will support the planning and implementation at the pilot sites as well as a grant for the youth cohort to apply their learned skills in a real world scenario using funds.

Faith Network of the East Bay is a non-profit organization aimed at working closely with local schools to provide hands-on enrichment programs designed to introduce science, technology, engineering and math experiences to under-privileged youth. PwC has been working with several schools in the district teaching financial literacy modules, and this grant will enable these lessons to be applied in a real-world setting and provide an enhanced learning experience through the stipend internship program.
