STRASBOURG, France, Sept. 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Qaelon Medical, a pioneer in real-time surgical leak detection and advanced insufflation technology, today announced the appointment of Marylise Boutros, MD, FRCSC, FACS, to its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). As a distinguished colorectal surgeon and internationally renowned researcher for the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida, Dr. Boutros's unparalleled expertise in colorectal surgery, multicenter clinical research, and clinical practice guideline development, will help shape Qaelon's clinical strategy to become the new standard of care for leak detection and localization in gastrointestinal and colorectal procedures.
Dr. Boutros joins existing SAB members Andrew Storm, MD, FASGE, Chair of Endoscopy at Mayo Clinic and Joel Dunning, MD, MBBS, PhD and thoracic surgeon at James Cook University Hospital in the UK.
"We're honored to welcome Dr. Boutros to our Scientific Advisory Board," said Eran Shlomovitz, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Founder of Qaelon Medical. "Dr. Boutros has been a leading voice in shaping how the surgical community understands and reports anastomotic leaks, notably through the CoReAL consensus framework. Her work has also illuminated the long-term impact of leaks on bowel function and quality of life, linking them directly to Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS). Her leadership in building robust research infrastructure, executing high-impact clinical trials, and advancing minimally invasive colorectal care will be invaluable as we adapt our leak detection and constant-flow insufflation platform for gastrointestinal and colorectal surgeries."
Dr. Marylise Boutros MD, FRCSC, FACS is a leading colorectal surgeon and Regional Vice-Chair of Research for the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic Florida, overseeing clinical research across four hospitals. In this leadership role, Dr. Boutros has secured new peer-review grants and NIH funding and grown active clinical trials from 12 to 69. Additionally, Dr. Boutros leads the Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) and serves as the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) Representative on the National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). A distinguished clinician-scientist, she practices advanced minimally invasive surgical approaches including robotics, transanal endoscopic surgery and endoscopy.
"I am excited to join Qaelon's Scientific Advisory Board," said Dr. Marylise Boutros. "For too long, anastomotic leaks have remained a recurrent problem, the real challenge is the uncertainty, and that leak rates are inconsistently reported across studies. Qaelon's technology offers a unique opportunity to bring transparency into the operating room, providing surgeons with actionable data and a clearer understanding of leak risks. I look forward to applying my experience in colorectal surgery and clinical practice guideline development to help guide Qaelon's clinical research and provide better understanding of surgical leaks through their real-time leak detection and precise localization— thereby advancing safer, less invasive GI procedures and improving patient outcomes."
"Qaelon is committed to using Real-World Evidence to bring the standard of care for surgical leak detection into the digital age with reliable, real-time, surgical leak detection and localization across every minimally invasive procedure," said Liam Burns, CEO of Qaelon Medical. "To achieve this, we are bringing together the world's leading clinicians, researchers, and surgical intelligence experts on our Scientific Advisory Board and Data Advisory Board. With their guidance, Qaelon is shifting the paradigm from reactive safeguards to proactive insights—ushering leak detection and localization into the digital surgery age while raising the bar for safety, precision, and efficiency."
