Qnovo Adds Certainty to EV Battery Passports with New Battery Genome Application

The application gives OEMs a clearer view of battery health, risk and value than sparse data can provide

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 24, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Qnovo, a leader in battery intelligence software, today announced it is piloting a new software application built on the Qnovo Battery Genome that gives automakers more certainty about the condition and value of the batteries they put on the road. Used electric vehicles are priced on uncertainty: two batteries of the same age and mileage can age very differently depending on driving profiles, environmental conditions and cell-to-cell variation, and the sparse data available in the aftermarket cannot tell them apart.

That uncertainty is about to have a ripple effect throughout the industry. Beginning February 18, 2027, the EU will require a digital battery passport for every EV battery placed on its market. Battery passports are an important step toward transparency, and for most batteries the basic data they carry will be enough. But a passport built on limited data cannot see a hidden defect or accelerated aging at the cell level. For the automaker certifying that passport, a battery that fails after being declared healthy is a liability, and as more EVs enter service, the number of those outliers grows.

Reducing that uncertainty requires the rich data that exists only inside the vehicle. Together with its automotive OEM partners, Qnovo applies the Battery Genome to the battery's full electrochemical record, including charging behavior, operating history, environmental exposure and cell-level variation. This software then identifies markers of accelerated aging and hidden defects, projecting how the battery is likely to age. The result is a clearer, risk-adjusted view of what the battery is and what it is not, with residual value as one of its outputs.
