Quinnipiac University Names New Medical School for 'Medicine's Michelangelo'

The Frank H. Netter, M.D., School of Medicine to open fall of 2013

HAMDEN, Conn., Nov. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Quinnipiac University announced today the naming of its new School of Medicine, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013. 

The Frank H. Netter, M.D., School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University is named in honor of the noted surgeon and world's most prolific medical illustrator. A major gift from Barbara and the late Edward Netter makes possible this tribute to Edward's first cousin.

"Ed and Barbara Netter have long been leaders in health care philanthropy," said Quinnipiac University President John L. Lahey. "This naming gift is another way in which they will continue to impact health care issues in perpetuity." 

Beginning in the late 1930s, Dr. Frank Netter began illustrating the entire anatomic and pathologic character of the human body, system by system. 

"As a medical illustrator, Dr. Netter provided generations of students with scientific and medical information that was simply not available before his works were widely published," said Dr. Bruce Koeppen, founding dean of the Frank H. Netter, M.D., School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University. "This is certainly a most appropriate and fitting name for our School of Medicine."

"Edward was in admiration of the contributions made by Frank to medicine," said Barbara Netter. "Frank was known as 'Medicine's Michelangelo,' creating atlases of the human anatomy that are to this day at the center of medical education throughout the world. Edward also had the utmost respect for the skillful guidance provided by John Lahey in leading Quinnipiac University.  Naming the new School of Medicine in honor of Frank is appropriate and timely."

Quinnipiac is currently seeking accreditation for its School of Medicine from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). According to Koeppen, the process is well underway.

"We plan to obtain preliminary accreditation in 2012, which will allow us to begin recruiting the first class that will enter in the fall of 2013," Koeppen said.
