Rasmussen College Joins the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to Celebrate Week of the Young Child

MINNEAPOLIS, April 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Rasmussen College, a regionally accredited private college, joins the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to celebrate Week of the Young Child (WOYC) April 24–28. NAEYC has celebrated WOYC annually since 1971. The week is dedicated to better meeting the needs of our country's young children, their families and those who teach them. This year, Rasmussen College will honor diverse families and bring awareness to anti-bias education. Its theme, Celebrating Our Youngest Learners: Honoring Diverse Families, will be celebrated throughout the College's 22 campuses.

"Today, the world and our classrooms are more diverse than ever. It is important for all children to feel valued and included every day," said Mary Muhs, Early Childhood Education (ECE) department chair at Rasmussen College.

The College will be hosting a webinar, "Anti-bias Education-Celebrating ALL Families in Our Care" on April 27 from 7:00–9:00 p.m. CDT. The webinar will focus on getting ECE professionals and teachers out of their comfort zones in order to make all children feel welcomed, valued and important each day. The webinar will explore the principle of anti-bias education and how ECE professionals can best work to promote an inclusive environment that is reflective of our world. "The goal of anti-bias education is to help children see who they are in this wide world, build self-confidence, validate their experiences and make their differences a positive," said Muhs. "Differences are what make you special and unique; they are not something that needs to be feared. Oftentimes it is fear of the unknown that creates conflicts. It is important children recognize unfairness and know how to stand up to it. This is learned with practice and it is important to start early with developmentally appropriate exercises and lessons."
