Raytheon BBN Technologies Chief Scientist Craig Partridge inducted into Internet Hall of Fame
High-speed Internet router's designer is third member of Raytheon team awarded prestigious honor
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon BBN Technologies Chief Scientist Craig Partridge was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame for designing critical email and IP routing technologies that increased the speed at which Internet messages move. He was recently honored at the Internet Society's 2017 Induction Ceremony in Los Angeles.
Partridge developed the modern email routing system in 1986. As Internet use expanded in the early 1990s, routers couldn't keep up with the explosive growth of email traffic. In response, Partridge developed the system architecture for high-speed routers that is still in use today.
"The fact that systems I developed 25 years ago are worthy of Internet Hall of Fame recognition today is a testament to the people I've been privileged to work with," said Craig Partridge, chief scientist of Raytheon BBN Technologies. "Their vision and insight drove me to create systems capable of evolving smoothly over time."
This is the most recent of many prestigious honors for Partridge. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The ACM honored him with the ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Award in 2006. Partridge was also an initial member of the Internet Engineering Steering Group, which is responsible for the technical management of Internet Engineering Task Force activities and the Internet standards process.
Partridge is the third member of the Raytheon BBN staff to earn Internet Hall of Fame honors. Ray Tomlinson, who sent the first network email in 1971 and saved the "@" symbol from probable extinction, was honored in 2012. In 2013, Steve Kent was inducted for his groundbreaking cybersecurity contributions that laid the foundation for modern Internet and email security encryption methods and standards.
