Recent Child Choking Death Could Have Been Averted Independent Study Suggests
FARMINGDALE, N.Y., Oct. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recent independent study conducted by Intertek, the effectiveness of LifeVac, a non-powered suction apparatus designed to save a choking victim, was tested using a custom designed anatomically correct mannequin. LifeVac successfully dislodged a hot dog, a grape, and a test ball during each test and was 100% effective.
In August it was reported that a second-grader at an Arizona school was fatally injured when he choked to death on a corn dog. According to the report, a teacher performed the Heimlich maneuver and a nurse assisted in CPR without success. The independent study suggests this child's death may have been averted with the proper use and application of LifeVac. In the US, a child dies every five days from choking.
