THE IMPACT OF YOUR PARTICIPATION
"For three decades, Susan G. Komen has been seeking cures and helping low-income, uninsured and under-served women have access to life-saving breast cancer screenings and treatment services, and that mission has never changed," said  Maureen Keenan Meldrum, chair, Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®. "Here in metro Detroit, since 1992, the Komen Detroit Race has raised and invested $21 million to help end breast cancer. We're grateful for the generosity of metro Detroiters and we ask that you continue to give whatever you can, to help save lives and end breast cancer."

Each year, the Race awards 75 percent of the net proceeds to breast cancer screening, treatment support and education programs for medically underserved people in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. The remaining 25 percent funds breast cancer research grants awarded through Komen for the Cure.

Thanks to the generosity of 40,000 participants, including 1,850 breast cancer survivors, 1,200 volunteers, 700 teams and 100 sponsors and underwriters, the 2011 Komen Detroit Race for the Cure awarded $1,475,000 to community programs and contributed nearly $422,000 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program.

Keenan Meldrum added, "We are also greatly indebted to our national and local sponsors who play a key role with invaluable contributions to Detroit's Race. We invite everyone to join us for the 2012 Race as we continue our work to end breast cancer forever."

The Karmanos Cancer Institute has served as the local presenting sponsor of the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure since its inception in 1992.

"Nowhere has there been a greater movement to raise awareness and end breast cancer than through the work of Komen for the Cure and its affiliates," said Gerold Bepler, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of the Karmanos Cancer Institute. "And nowhere is there a more dedicated team of physicians, researchers and staff who work tirelessly to develop new treatments for patients diagnosed with cancer than at Karmanos. We are grateful for our partnership with Komen and for the many supporters in our community and beyond who share in our vision of a world free of cancer."
