Roofing Expert Jeremiah Lightsey Explains Roof Flashing and Leak Prevention in HelloNation

The article examines how flashing protects vulnerable roof joints and identifies warning signs that may indicate repairs are needed.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

• Flashing directs water away from roof joints, chimneys, valleys, walls, and other vulnerable areas.
• Different flashing types work together to guide water down the roof and away from the structure.
• Rust, loose metal, cracked vent boots, and interior water stains can signal problems requiring professional evaluation.

BOAZ, Ala., Nov. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- How does roof flashing help prevent leaks around chimneys, valleys, and walls? HelloNation has published a HelloNation article that provides the answer through insights from Jeremiah Lightsey, Roofing Expert of Boaz, Alabama, explaining how these protective components keep water away from vulnerable joints.

Why Do Roof Joints Need Additional Protection?

The HelloNation article explains that shingles are only one part of a roof's water protection. Chimneys, walls, skylights, and pipes interrupt the roof surface, creating areas where water can enter.

Roof flashing uses thin material, usually metal, to direct water away from these openings. Common materials include galvanized steel, aluminum, and copper.

The article emphasizes that selecting the correct type and layering it properly with surrounding materials are essential. Caulk or roofing cement alone does not provide the same protection as properly installed flashing.

How Do Different Flashing Types Guide Water?

The article describes step flashing as overlapping metal pieces installed with shingles where a sloped roof meets a wall. Counter flashing covers the upper edge to help prevent water from running behind it.

Chimneys may require several components working together. Larger chimneys sometimes include a peaked structure called a cricket that diverts water around the uphill side.

Valleys channel water where roof slopes meet. The article also explains that drip edge protects roof edges, while kickout flashing directs runoff into gutters instead of behind siding.

Vent pipes require fitted boots or similar protection. Their rubber collars can deteriorate after prolonged sun exposure.

What Warning Signs Suggest Flashing Problems?

The HelloNation article identifies ceiling stains near chimneys or skylights, damp attic areas, and damaged wood as possible clues. Outside, loose or rusted metal and visible gaps may indicate trouble.

The article recommends observing obvious problems from the ground rather than climbing onto the roof. Professional inspections can help determine whether localized repairs or replacement are appropriate.

During roof replacement, worn flashing also deserves attention. The article cautions that reusing deteriorated components can undermine the protection provided by new shingles.
