Rutgers Announces 2017 Hall of Distinguished Alumni Honorees
Inductees to include leaders in medical research, philanthropy, marine construction, and digital media
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., Feb. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Rutgers University Alumni Association will induct four extraordinary honorees into the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni on Saturday, May 6, 2017. The 30th annual awards ceremony will commemorate these Rutgers graduates and their accomplishments in philanthropy and economic development, neurological and genetic research, marine construction and tunneling, and digital media and technology.
This year's honorees include:
Ray Chambers
School of Business 1964
Ray Chambers cofounded a successful private equity firm before embarking on a second career in philanthropy and as a United Nations special envoy. His work has had a profound impact on global health initiatives and on the cultural, educational, and economic life of his hometown of Newark, New Jersey.
Alice Lazzarini
Graduate School of New Brunswick 1976, 1996
Alice Lazzarini is a renowned medical researcher and the author of Both Sides Now: A Journey from Researcher to Patient. During the mid-1990s, she codiscovered the first gene mutation linked to familial Parkinsonism, changing the paradigm of Parkinson's research.
Richard Weeks
School of Engineering 1950
Richard Weeks is chair of Weeks Marine, Inc., one of the leading marine construction firms in North America. The company handles projects throughout North and South America, from inland waterways to offshore sites in the Pacific and the Atlantic.
SY Lau
Rutgers Business School–Newark and New Brunswick 2004
SY Lau is a leader in the development of China's flourishing internet industry. He is senior executive vice present of Tencent Holdings Limited, the fourth-largest internet company in the world, and president of its Online Media Group.

The black-tie event will be hosted at the Hyatt Regency in downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Established in 1987, the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni recognizes alumni who, through their superlative achievements in professional and civic life, have brought honor to themselves and to the university.
Only 228 graduates have been inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni in Rutgers' history. Notable members include chef and restaurateur Mario Batali, late actor James Gandolfini, author Janet Evanovich, NBC news anchor Natalie Morales, late actor and humanitarian Paul Robeson, Nobel Prize winners Selman Waksman and Milton Friedman, and five former New Jersey governors.
