SAP on Track to Meet Year-End Sustainability Targets

WALLDORF, Germany, Nov. 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Executing on its commitment to making the world run better, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today released its quarterly sustainability update for the third quarter of 2011.

SAP's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the quarter ending September 30, 2011, totaled 112 kilotons (not including Sybase), a two percent increase compared to the third quarter of 2010. While the size of the company's global employee base increased by three percent overall from third quarter 2010 to third quarter 2011, the emissions per individual employee (in full-time equivalents) decreased by two percent. Individual reductions were achieved as a result of targeted energy efficiency programs and a decrease in air travel.

In the third quarter, SAP signed on to be one of the first companies that will adhere to the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard to assess its entire value chain emissions impact. The new standard was launched by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol in partnership with the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). SAP plans to offer visibility into how it is performing against this new standard beginning with the release of the 2011 SAP Sustainability Report next year.

Advancing its goal to fill 25 percent of its leadership positions with women by 2017, SAP further increased the number to 18.6 percent in the third quarter of 2011, compared to 17.8 percent at the end of the third quarter 2010. SAP also celebrated its 5th annual "Global Diversity Days," which brought together a record 8,000 employees across 30 offices worldwide to drive diversity awareness and education.

Overall, the company's focused sustainability initiatives led to a cost avoidance of approximately EUR 195 million between the start of 2008 and today, in comparison to a "business as usual" extrapolation. SAP remains on track to meet the year-end emissions target of 460 kilotons, in line with its long-term target to reduce GHG emissions to year-2000 levels by 2020.
