Save the Redwoods League Marks 100th Anniversary in October 2018 with a Week of Events Throughout California
Free Festivals, Films, Gala are Planned October 7-14
SAN FRANCISCO, July 24, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Save the Redwoods League, celebrating its centennial year as the only nonprofit dedicated to protecting and restoring California's coast redwood and giant sequoia forests, today announced its official Centennial Celebration Week events for October 7-14, 2018. The public statewide events will honor the conservation legacy of the League and its partners to protect California's state trees over the last 100 years and the League's vision for its second century of conservation leadership. The League will host two free festivals, a film premiere, and an inaugural gala, among other events. For details, see the schedule below and visit our events webpage.

Stand for the Redwoods Festival in Humboldt County
When: Sunday, October 7, 2018, noon-4 p.m.
Where: Orick, California
Who: General public, all ages
What: Kicking off Centennial Celebration Week is this free festival at the gateway to Redwood National and State Parks, home of the world's tallest forest, where 45 percent of the remaining old-growth coast redwoods stand protected today. This family-friendly community event offers live music, children's activities, local food trucks, a beer garden sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewery, a wine garden sponsored by Barefoot Cellars, and more. The festival is hosted by the League, Redwood National and State Parks, and the Redwood Parks Conservancy in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Save the Redwoods League and the 50th anniversary of Redwood National Park. Old Survivor Film Premiere
When: Tuesday, October 9, 2018, 5:30-10 p.m.
Where: Chabot Space & Science Center's Megadome Theater, Oakland, California
Who: Members of Oakland Trails and League guests; all ages; advance registration required. Request an invitation.
What: See the world premiere of the Old Survivor documentary celebrating Oakland's redwood forests, and join a reception following its debut. The film highlights the only remaining old-growth coast redwood in the Oakland Hills and tells the story of the resilient, ecologically rich, and now protected redwood parklands. Oakland Trails produced the 20-minute documentary with filmmakers, Emily Fraser and Nicholas Berger. The film features League staff members, City of Oakland Parks, and the East Bay Regional Park District. The debut event is hosted by Oakland Trails.

Centennial Celebration Annual Member Event
When: Wednesday, October 10, 2018, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, California
Who: Open to all area League Members. Donate to become a member.
What: Join us for an evening to celebrate our first 100 years of protecting, restoring, and connecting people to magnificent redwood forests, a wonder of the natural world. Meet other passionate redwood supporters, see the renowned African Mammal Hall, and experience a range of natural habitats, including a redwood forest.

Free Second Saturdays in Redwood State Parks
When: Saturday, October 13, 2018. 8 a.m. to sunset.
Where: More than 40 redwood state parks
Who: General public, all ages, passes required
What: Experience California's spectacular redwood state parks for the first time, or rekindle your love for them. Join us outdoors at more than 40 redwood state parks and enjoy stunning scenery, exercise, fresh air, and the opportunity for connecting with family and friends. Save the Redwoods League and California State Parks have teamed up to offer free vehicle day-use passes on the second Saturday of each month throughout 2018 in celebration of the League's centennial year and their longstanding history to protect the coast redwood and giant sequoia forests together.

Centennial Celebration Gala
When: Saturday, October 13, 2018, 5 p.m.-1 a.m.
Where: Union Square and August Hall, San Francisco, California

What: Save the Redwoods League is hosting a benefit for its Education and Parks Support programs, which serve more than 7,500 schoolchildren and millions of redwood park visitors annually. The party begins under a redwoods-inspired tented Union Square in San Francisco with a magical cocktail party featuring illusionist JB Benn, followed by an elegant sit-down dinner prepared by San Francisco's top chefs at McCalls Catering and Events and a live auction featuring one-of-a-kind redwood adventures that only Save the Redwoods League can deliver. The party will culminate with a thrilling musical performance by Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and friends with special guest John Mayer at San Francisco's newest performance venue August Hall, a short stroll from Union Square. Stand for the Redwoods Festival in San Francisco

What: The Stand for the Redwoods Festival in San Francisco is the capstone event of Centennial Celebration Week. This free family-friendly festival offers live music and other entertainment, activities provided by the League's lead Centennial partners, and a Sierra Nevada Brewery beer garden. People from the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond will gather to celebrate 100 years of redwoods conservation and take a stand for their future. Humboldt Redwoods Marathon, Half Marathon, or 5K
When: Sunday, October 14, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Where: Humboldt Redwoods State Park, Humboldt County, California
Who: General public, advance registration required
What: Run through one of the nation's most scenic courses in the Humboldt Redwoods Marathon. You'll be surrounded by towering, ancient coast redwoods as you run along the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which Save the Redwoods League created in 1921.

Giant Sequoia Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS®) K-12 Distance Learning Program
When: October 8-12. Available upon request through the 2018/2019 school year
Where: Online. Learn more about the California State Parks PORTS distance learning programs at www.ports.parks.ca.gov
Who: Available globally for K-12 classrooms
What: Experience the giant sequoia groves at Calaveras Big Trees State Park and engage directly with League scientists and State Park professionals through the Giant Sequoia PORTS Program. PORTS is a free distance learning program that uses interactive video conferencing to provide digital access to California State Parks. PORTS programs are designed for kindergarten through 12th-grade classrooms and are aligned with Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. The Giant Sequoia PORTS program, presented by California State Parks, will be offered for the first time during the Centennial Celebration Week, after which it will become a regular offering throughout the 2018/2019 school year. Supporting educational content for educators will be available online later this summer. Educators are also encouraged to participate in the long-standing coastal redwood ecology PORTS program from California's redwood state parks on the north coast to extend learning opportunities about redwood forests.
