Scholastic News Kids Press Corps Seeks Students to Join Award-Winning Editorial Team
Kids Ages 10-14 with a "Nose for News" Encouraged to Apply for 2018-2019 Program Year
NEW YORK, March 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The award-winning Scholastic News Kids Press Corps, a team of student journalists ages 10–14 from across the country and around the world, is now accepting applications for the 2018–2019 school year. Kids with a passion for journalism and an interest in reporting "news for kids by kids" are invited to apply. Applications must be received by May 31, 2018. Scholastic News Kid Reporters gain valuable writing and critical-thinking skills and first-hand journalism experience through local and national news assignments, which lead to unique opportunities to witness important events and interview newsmakers, including politicians, authors, actors, musicians, and professional athletes. Interviews from years past include former Vice President Joe Biden, Puerto Rico's Secretary of Education Dr. Julia Keleher, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Captain Underpants author Dav Pilkey, musical theater star Kristin Chenoweth, conservationist Jane Goodall, comedian and talk show host Trevor Noah, tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands, and quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles Nick Foles, among others.
Throughout the 2017–2018 program year, 44 Kid Reporters covered breaking news, current events, entertainment stories, and sporting events around the world, including the 2017 New York City mayoral election, the 2017 National Book Awards, the U.S. Open, and the Royal Melbourne Show in Australia, in addition to breaking news such as Hurricanes Harvey and Maria, and the Thomas Fire in Southern California. Their articles and video interviews are available on the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps website (scholastic.com/kidspress) as well as in select issues of Scholastic Classroom Magazines, which reach more than 25 million students in classrooms nationwide. Recently, the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps was recognized by FOLIO: as a min's 2017 Editorial & Design Awards winner for "News Coverage" of the 2016 presidential election. The program also received an honorable mention in the 2017 FOLIO: Eddie and Ozzie Awards for "Editorial Team of the Year."
