In The Marvels, Selznick crafts another remarkable artistic and bookmaking achievement that weaves together two seemingly unrelated stories—one in words, the other in pictures—with spellbinding synergy. The illustrated story begins in 1766 with Billy Marvel, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, and charts the adventures of his family of actors over five generations. The prose story opens in 1990 and follows Joseph, who has run away from school to an estranged uncle's puzzling house in London, where he, along with the reader, must piece together many mysteries. About Brian Selznick
Brian Selznick graduated from the Rhode Island School of Art and Design in 1988 and worked for two years after graduation at independent bookstore Eeyore's Books for Children in New York City. His first book, The Houdini Box, was inspired by a fascination with the famous magician. His illustrations for Barbara Kerley's The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins won a Caldecott Honor award in 2002; and in 2008, his groundbreaking book The Invention of Hugo Cabret was awarded the Caldecott Medal, was nominated for a National Book Award, and was the basis for Martin Scorsese's Oscar-winning film Hugo.
