LEAWOOD, Kan., Oct. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy recently reported disappointing but not surprising news regarding the financial competency of US high school students. Of the 1525 schools across the country who participated in their 2012 National Financial Capability Challenge, the average student scored a "D+" (69 percent). BMO Harris Bank wants to help change that grade by providing an electronic-based financial literacy program to a number of Kansas City area high schools.
Equipping youth with sound financial skills helps put them on a path to being a successful adult. BMO Harris Bank has enlisted EverFi, a leading provider of Internet based education that teaches, tests, and certifies students a variety of life skills, to provide their financial education program in several states.
The Kansas City area high schools who will be putting students through the six hour (plus simulation) program sponsored by BMO Harris are: J.C. Harmon High School, F.L. Schlagle High School, Washington High School, and Wyandotte High School.
"Clearly the school bell continues to ring regarding the need to equip our young people with the tools to make sound financial decisions," said Brad Smith, Kansas City President, BMO Harris Bank. "We believe that presenting financial information via technology is a smart way to get, and keep, kids engaged."
