Shatterproof Appoints Susan Furtney as Chief Impact Officer

Veteran healthcare and nonprofit executive to lead an integrated national strategy advancing addiction prevention, treatment, recovery, policy, and stigma reduction

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Shatterproof, the national nonprofit dedicated to creating a world where addiction never defines or ends a life, today announced the appointment of Susan Furtney as its new Chief Impact Officer (CIO). In this executive leadership role, Furtney will oversee Shatterproof's impact portfolio, including treatment quality initiatives, prevention, public education, healthcare partnerships, research, policy and advocacy, and grassroots engagement.

Furtney brings three decades of experience spanning nonprofit leadership, healthcare strategy, health equity, population health, operations, and systems transformation. Most recently, she served as Chief Strategy Officer at Health Leads, a national nonprofit focused on addressing the systemic causes of health inequity. Prior to that, she was Chief Strategy Officer at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate University Hospital that serves 1.8 million people across Central New York.

As Chief Impact Officer, Furtney will lead the integration and continued development of Shatterproof's impact programs and initiatives, ensuring evidence, strategy, policy, and community engagement align to achieve measurable outcomes and lasting systems change. The position was created as part of Shatterproof's organizational evolution to bring its impact work together under a unified strategy and structure.

At Upstate University Hospital, she led regional expansion efforts, business development and ambulatory care initiatives integrating primary care, behavioral health, addiction services, and community resources.

During her career, Furtney has led organizational transformation efforts across healthcare systems and nonprofits, overseen major strategic initiatives, built innovative community partnerships, and championed data-informed approaches to improving health and well-being. Her experience spans healthcare delivery, behavioral health integration, community engagement, policy, and organizational strategy.

Furtney received her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her Master of Public Health from Emory University. She is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a member of the Make-A-Wish Central New York Board of Trustees.
