SkinCure Oncology Cites New Analysis Indicating Annual Incidence of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer is 42 Percent Greater than Generally Believed

For more than a decade, health professionals and patient advocates have cited a key statistic in their discussion of NMSC. Their north star has been the statement that 3.3 million Americans are diagnosed with some 5.4 million NMSC lesions annually. Today, 14 years after the underlying data were collected, a fresh analysis of current data shows that 4.7 million Americans are diagnosed with NMSC annually, translating to an estimated 6.7 to 7.7 million lesions.

According to Brandt, "This significantly higher estimate of skin cancer incidence, an increase of more than 40 percent, underscores the critical importance of educating the public about skin cancer and providing them access to all available treatment options."

The lower statistics were reported in a 2015 study that analyzed data from 2012. This new benchmark of 4.7 million patients is a conservative estimate, based on four methodologies:

• Demographic Realities: NMSC heavily impacts older individuals, with 80 percent of cases occurring in those age 60 and older. Since 2012, the U.S. population age 65 and older has surged by nearly 50 percent, from 43.1 million to roughly 64 million in 2026. Factoring this in while freezing individual risk at 2012 levels yields 4.7 million patients.
• Conservative Compound Growth: While the period 2006-2012 saw 7 percent annual growth in the number of affected individuals, applying just one-third of that trend (2.5 percent annually) up to 2026 produces the same 4.7 million figure.
• Independent Survey Corroboration: Historical data from the federal Medical Expenditure Panel Survey shows NMSC patient numbers had already crossed the 4 million threshold more than a decade ago, indicating that the 4.7 million metric is likely conservative.
• The Upper Bound Limit: Extrapolating the true 2006 - 2012 trajectory linearly into 2026 would place the current number closer to 5.9 million individuals, indicating that 4.7 million is a conservative baseline.
