KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla., April 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Space for Humanity, the nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to space and the transformative perspective it provides, congratulates NASA on the successful launch of Artemis II.
As the first crewed Artemis mission, Artemis II builds on the legacy of the Apollo program, and signals a renewed commitment to exploration and scientific discovery. Artemis II will now travel roughly 250,000 miles from Earth – deeper into space than humans have ever ventured before. The mission lays the groundwork for humanity's return to the Moon and advances the long-term vision of sustainable human activity in deep space.
"We want to express our enthusiastic congratulations to NASA, the many thousands who have worked on SLS, and the brave crew of Artemis II on this successful launch," said Space for Humanity Executive Director, Antonio Peronace. "For the first time in more than 50 years, humans are traveling back to the Moon! The crew of Artemis II will be the first astronauts in half a century to experience a lunar Overview Effect."
When individuals see Earth from space, many experience a profound shift in perspective characterized by a deeper appreciation of our planet's fragility, unity, and interconnectedness, a phenomenon known as the Overview Effect. Space for Humanity believes this perspective can inspire greater cooperation, innovation, and shared responsibility for our home planet, which is why it is our mission to ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to share in that view.
"Watching this launch live reminded me of the power of innovation, collaboration, and reaching for the stars. These four incredible individuals will carry with them the excitement and wonderment of billions farther than we have ever gone. We wish them a successful, 10-day mission and their safe return. We cannot wait to hear about the perspective they will bring back with them," continued Peronace.
Space for Humanity's work complements NASA's efforts to shape the future of human spaceflight by expanding who has the opportunity to experience space and helping ensure the benefits of exploration are extended to and shared with people around the world. Space for Humanity celebrates Artemis II as an important milestone not only for NASA and the United States, but for all humanity. We look forward to the continued progress of the Artemis missions and celebrate the scientists, engineers, astronauts, and visionaries whose work is shaping our next chapter of exploration.
