Speaker Newt Gingrich Statement on the Passing of Congressman Bob Franks
WASHINGTON, April 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Callista and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Congressman Bob Franks and extend our prayers to his family and friends at this difficult time.
Bob and I first worked together in the late 1980s when he was an aggressive, idea oriented leader of the New Jersey GOP, while also serving in the State Assembly.
Under Bob Franks' leadership, New Jersey Republicans gained a veto proof majority in the Legislature. His work set the stage for Christie Whitman to win the Governorship in 1993.
While we served together in Congress, Bob was a major force for an effective reform oriented team. With his help in 1994, through the Contract with America, we gained the first House Republican majority in 40 years.
In recent years we worked together on health care policy in effort to lower costs and keep jobs in New Jersey.
Bob will be deeply missed by the many people he touched.
