Squire Sanders Leads the Way to 'Intelligent Discovery' With Equivio>Relevance Technology
NEW YORK, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Global law firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. has announced it is adopting Equivio's technology Equivio>Relevance™ as the cornerstone of an innovative solution to the greatest electronic discovery challenge facing clients: managing the cost of high-volume document reviews.
"Modern litigation triggers a deluge of discoverable information that cannot be effectively managed with traditional strategies that rely on using associates or contract lawyers to page through ever-escalating volumes of data," said Howard J. C. Nicols, Squire Sanders' global managing partner for practices and head of the firm's advocacy practice area. "That type of review multiplies the time and expense of discovery and, if not managed effectively, can sacrifice quality."
"Our strategy, which we call intelligent discovery, is an alternative approach that we believe provides clients with the best possible value by delivering enhanced review quality within a well-controlled cost framework," Nicols said. "Intelligent discovery seeks to reduce e-discovery costs by eliminating to the greatest extent possible the cost of human review. Intelligent discovery combines review by experienced trial lawyers with automated analysis and prioritization of potentially relevant documents to deliver reliable and cost-effective results."
Based on initial input from an experienced attorney, Equivio>Relevance quickly and reliably assesses document relevance. This enables the data set to be reduced to a much lower, workable volume that can then be managed in the manner appropriate to the circumstances of a particular case.
Equivio>Relevance achieves high levels of recall and precision, helping overcome the challenges of over- and under-inclusion that characterize traditional keyword-based culling methods. By organizing the review set according to relevance scores, Equivio>Relevance is a powerful tool for early case assessment, pre-filtering and prioritization of review. The product can also be used to support quality assurance and consistency in traditional review methods.
Squire Sanders tested Equivio>Relevance against known data sets that had been reviewed previously using traditional methods.
"Our evaluation demonstrated that the intelligent discovery approach found as many, and in most cases more, of the relevant documents than standard human review," Nicols said.
"Through its innovative intelligent discovery approach, Squire Sanders has developed a cutting-edge and fundamental improvement in the way that litigators perform electronic discovery," said Amir Milo, CEO of Equivio. "Given the demonstrable efficiencies, we believe this strategy can serve Squire Sanders' client base well, enhancing the quality and consistency of document review while controlling litigation costs."
