S&R Foundation Introduces 12 DC-Based Artists Selected for Pilot Studios Program at Historic Fillmore School in Georgetown
WASHINGTON, May 16, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- S&R Foundation today announced the 12 DC Artists selected for the pilot Studios Program at The Fillmore School. S&R is a Washington, DC-based non-profit that supports gifted individuals in the arts, sciences and social entrepreneurship. The S&R Foundation purchased the historic Georgetown building in June 2015, and decided to open it up for use by local artists while a larger planning and renovation process for the site is pending.
"We were astonished at the quantity, the quality and the diversity of over 200 artists who submitted applications, all of them seeking to create social change, and in need of studio space to pursue independent study," said Dr. Sachiko Kuno, President of S&R. "In fact, we were so impressed by the level of creativity and vision in the applicant pool that we decided to increase the number of artists accepted from 10 to 12. Supporting such bold and innovative artists is at the core of our mission here at the Foundation."
Four men and eight women have been selected to participate, representing diverse backgrounds and a wide array of different artistic disciplines. All are united in their passion for the transformative potential of the arts in our society.
The S&R Foundation Studios Program artists are:
Eames Armstrong, Interdisciplinary artist (painting, performance, sound)
Monica Jahan Bose, Interdisciplinary artist (painting, video, installation, performance)
Marion Colomer, Painting, photography and printmaking
Ayana Zaire Cotton, Interdisciplinary artist (textiles, writing)
Tarik Davis, Hip-Hop recording artist, educator, youth advocate
Reilly Dowd, Documentary filmmaker
Anna Kaminiski, Interdisciplinary artist (photography, installation and performance art)
Mattias Kraemer, Actor, producer, filmmaker, cultural anthropologist
Erik Moe, Interdisciplinary artist (writing, visual arts)
Daniel Singh, Dance and Choreography
Anna Tsouhlarakis, Interdisciplinary artist (sculpture, installation, video and performance art)
Grethe Wittrock, Fiber artist, designer
The S&R Foundation Studios Program will provide these artists with dedicated studio space to pursue advanced independent study and individual practice through to November 11, 2016. All artists will participate in an end-of-pilot exhibition as well as several workshops and sessions that will help inform S&R Foundation's development of a full-scale artist residency and fellowship program, to be launched at the Fillmore School in late 2017.
