Celebrating 10 years as a national hub for innovation
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The St. Petersburg Innovation District is marking a decade of transformative impact, driving economic growth, advancing groundbreaking research and positioning the region as a national hub for innovation.
Now, as the Innovation District marks its tenth anniversary, leaders are calling on partners, investors and innovators to help shape its next decade of growth. Visit https://www.stpeteinnovationdistrict.com/membership to learn how to join us.
Over the past ten years, the Innovation District has generated more than $3 billion in economic impact and supported over 10,000 jobs, fueled by rapid expansion across key sectors including marine science and life sciences.
Marine science now adds $700 million to the economy. This is a large increase of 274% since 2018. It supports more than 2,000 jobs, with 1,300 new ones added in that time. The life sciences field now contributes $1.7 billion to the economy. It has grown by 112% since 2018. This field has added over 2,000 new jobs. Its total workforce is now almost 6,700 people.
This growth is reinforced by a strong academic pipeline. Institutions surrounding the district are producing talent at a pace that outstrips national trends, with overall diploma attainment rising 27.5% since 2016, compared to 10% nationwide. Growth in STEAM fields is even more pronounced, with a 46.9% increase locally, far exceeding the 11.7% national rise — further strengthening the region's innovation economy.
Across the Innovation District, there have been transformative physical investments during this time including the Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital Education and Research Building, Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital's Institute Square, the Maritime and Defense Technology Hub, spARK Labs by ARK Invest, and the Florida Institute of Oceanography's research vessels Hogarth and Western Flyer.
"This is a defining moment for the Innovation District," said Alison Barlow, CEO of the St. Petersburg Innovation District. "In just ten years, we've built a powerful ecosystem where research, talent and collaboration fuel real economic impact — and we're just getting started."
As it enters its second decade, the Innovation District is poised to build on this foundation — accelerating discovery, expanding opportunity and continuing to shape the future of innovation on Florida's Gulf Coast.
The Innovation District will be holding a special anniversary celebration on April 10, 2026 at 4:30pm. For details visit the event page.
