StartUp Open at Start-Up Nation

StartUp Open is a competition featured during Global Entreperneurship Week. The competition was originally launched as part of the Kauffman Foundation Global Entrepreneurship Week in 2010 and has since been a leader in the promotion and nourishment of aspiring entrepreneurs. StartUp Open is one of the world's largest competitions for startup companies and boasts participation from 37 countries.

The idea behind the competition is to provide startups, in their early stages, a chance to develop their ideas and present them to entrepreneurs and judges who have extensive experience in relevant fields. StartUp Open welcomes entrepreneurs from all over the world to share their business skills and gain global exposure.

StartUp Open in Israel 

Israel has been participating in StartUp Open since its inception in 2010. Israeli entrepreneurs have consistently ranked highly and presented an array of business ideas to the rest of the world.

The startups that represented Israel in the past include Folloyu and Nova-Lumos. Folloyu moves web sessions to cellphones and has already completed several rounds of funding. Nova-Lumos enables citizens in developing countries to use electricity via cellphone networks, bringing affordable, modern electricity to off-grid communities.

This year, the winning Israeli company will receive a package of services with a value of thousands of shekels and will automatically be entered into the list of the World's Top 50 Most Promising Startups, also known as the GEW50. The company chosen to represent Israel is then invited to compete internationally for a variety of other prize packages which include a number of services provided to them by international organizations.

Additionally, a small number of the top winning companies will be hosted, for three months rent-free, in the GEW Startup House, located in Kansas City. While there, these entrepreneurs will have access to high-speed internet and other state-of-the-art technologies as well as benefit from many invaluable networking opportunities that facilitate dialogue and cooperation between entrepreneurs and other like-minded individuals.

Registration for StartUp Open 2014 will be open until July 23, 2014. After a thorough process of judging, the final round of the StartUp Open competition in Israel will take place on September 22 in front of an audience composed of entrepreneurs, managers, investors, researchers, and government representatives. The final event will be held in Jerusalem.
