State Farm Insurance Presents $10,000 to ShareFest Community Development as Part of Year-round After-school Program at Avalon High School in Wilmington, CA.
WILMINGTON, Calif., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- State Farm Insurance will present a $10,000 check for an after-school program at Avalon High School on Friday, October 29th @ 11am. Ricardo Hong of the LA Mayor's Office, joined by Michael Romero, the Superintendent of LAUSD District 8 will join members from State Farm Insurance and ShareFest for this special presentation.
The recently received grant will allow ShareFest to continue our tutoring program, with a focus on helping students to develop and strengthen basic skills in order to pass the California High School Exit Exam. It will also allow them to introduce a college preparatory element that will focus on the benefits of going to college. Additionally, ShareFest will have the opportunity to launch a life skills curriculum with a focus on job readiness. After graduating, the second biggest concern of these students is not only finding employment, but also being prepared for today's job market.
Since ShareFest's involvement at this school, it has seen the 100% at-risk students thrive! Avalon just had their largest graduating class as well as their highest percentage of proficiency on the California High School Exit Exam.
Principal Awtry from Avalon High School said, "Since ShareFest's involvement at this school, graduation numbers have more than doubled: 53 students completed their requirements for a diploma in 2009-2010!"
State Farm Public Affairs Specialist, Priscilla Orozco says "State Farm has a strong and ongoing commitment to ensure all children have access to an education that will allow them to achieve their greatest potential. We are proud to partner with ShareFest to further advance their mission of empowering youth to overcome educational obstacles and lead dynamic, accomplished lives."
Ricardo Hong with the LA Mayor's Office says, "I was proud to introduce ShareFest to Avalon Continuation School and it's great to see businesses invest into their innovative programming to mentor at-risk youth to make healthy choices."
Chad Mayer, Executive Director of ShareFest, says, "ShareFest is thrilled and excited to be the recipient of this grant, so we may continue to enhance the lives of Avalon's youth and bring programs that students are interested in."
