BLOOMINGTON, Ill., April 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Communities across the United States and Canada answered the call from State Farm® to help create a positive impact in their community and submitted 4,000 causes as part of this year's State Farm Neighborhood Assist. Now the top 200 causes have been selected by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board® and they need your "assist" to help vote them into the top 40. From April 28 through May 16, anyone who has the free State Farm Neighborhood Assist Facebook application can vote daily for their favorite cause, or causes, and help bring $25,000 to the top 40 vote-getters!

In its third year, State Farm Neighborhood Assist is a youth-led philanthropic program that empowers individuals of all ages to identify the issues they feel are the most important to their communities. The State Farm Youth Advisory Board, a diverse group of 30 students who are passionate about social responsibility, manages the program and reviewed each of the 4,000 cause submissions selecting the top 200 finalists using a scoring criterion they created. The 200 finalists now move on to a public vote with the nonprofits of the top 40 vote receiving causes receiving a $25,000 grant.
"After reviewing this year's cause submissions, I'm inspired by the variety of ways people are working every day to make their communities better places to live," said Youth Advisory Board member Jared Padgett, a Junior at the University of Florida. "This year we received at least one cause submission from every eligible state, district and province in the United States and Canada; it's really exciting."
Overall, 41 states and Canadian provinces have causes in the top 200. The states with the most submissions in the top 200 were California (26), Illinois (17), Texas (13), Michigan (12) and Florida (10).
"The Youth Advisory Board is all about youth empowerment and development," continued Jared Padgett. "It's great to see that this year half of the causes submitted (50%) would directly benefit individuals in the 0-18 year-old age group."
The 200 causes have until May 16 to rally votes in their community, with anyone voting allowed up to 10 votes per day. On May 27, the top 40 vote-receiving causes will be announced on the Facebook app and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to the affiliated nonprofits.

About the Youth Advisory Board
The Youth Advisory Board is comprised of 30 students, ages 17-20, from across the United States and Canada who serve a two-year term. Their directive is to implement a $5 million-a-year signature service-learning initiative to address issues important to youth and communities. The Board is completely autonomous and youth-driven, and funds projects focused on issues selected by the board that impact youth. It consists of a diverse group of full-time students at high schools and universities. Each member commits about 15 hours a month to the Board and participates in three face-to-face meetings per calendar year. The Board will fund the 40 grants awarded through the State Farm Neighborhood Assist program with a portion of its $5 million funding in 2014.
