Student Nurses Get Helping Hand in Pursuit of Career Goals

BROOKFIELD, Wis., April 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In support of the next generation of nurses, OnCourse Learning presented more than $4,000 in scholarships this month at the National Student Nurses' Association's 65^th annual conference in Dallas.

"Every year, the stories of our scholarship winners remind me of my own educational journey and how I was helped by scholarships and grants," said Robert Hess, PhD, RN, FAAN, executive vice president and chief clinical executive, healthcare, for OnCourse Learning. "The commitment of our company to support nursing students is appreciated by our annual scholarship winners."

The OnCourse Learning Scholarships were among 81 awarded, for a total of $144,000, by the Foundation of the NSNA for the 2017-18 academic year. Hess represents OnCourse Learning as a member of the FNSNA's board of trustees.

This year's OnCourse Learning Scholarship winners are:

• Rebecca Ashley, Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., $1,175 scholarship
• Amanda Carlton, Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing, Richmond, Va., $1,100 scholarship
• Emma Harbison, Martin Methodist College, Pulaski, Tenn., $1,175 scholarship
• Hannah Steen, Tulsa Community College, Tulsa, Okla., $1,100 scholarship

Ashley is a senior nursing student at Clemson and plans to work as an obstetric nurse after graduation. She wants to continue her education by pursuing a master's degree, most likely in nursing administration.

"Paying for my last semester of school was a big burden for me, and that burden is lighter thanks to this scholarship," Ashley said. "It will help me reach my goal of obtaining a master's degree faster."

Carlton is in her final year of the BSN program at Bon Secours. She hopes to continue her schooling and help nursing students as an educator.

"In the future, I hope I can return the favor of this generosity by becoming a nurse educator and helping generate funds for students in the healthcare field," Carlton said. "This scholarship is greatly appreciated and will help me in completing my BSN degree."

Harbison is a junior at Martin Methodist and is studying to become a pediatric nurse.

"I have wanted to become a nurse since I was a little girl," Harbison said. "Never once have I changed my mind. I look forward to being able to help people and change lives every day."

Steen works full time as a CNA while attending school as a third-semester student. Her career goal is to become a CRNA or an APRN.

"I want to continue my education to be the best possible advocate for my patients," Steen said. "Every day, I realize how much I truly love the nursing profession."
