SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., March 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In honor of World Water Day, the Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the World ocean and 100% of its coastline, is asking citizens across the country to join its "Every Drop Counts" campaign and pledge to skip their shower on World Water Day, March 22. Whether at home, at the beach or at work, it's everyone's responsibility to protect local water supplies and to prevent pollution from reaching the ocean, and pledge to skip the shower on World Water Day, March 22. A ten-minute shower could waste more than 40 gallons of water. If 25,000 people take the pledge, nearly one million gallons of water will be conserved on that day. And the less water that goes down the drain ultimately means less wastewater that needs to be treated and discharged into the ocean and other waterways.
Taking the pledge can last beyond March 22. In addition to sacrificing a shower on World Water Day, consumers can choose to be mindful every day to reduce their water footprint.
"We all know that water is a vital resource, yet we don't really pay attention to the impact our daily use has on the big picture," said Dr. Chad Nelsen, Surfrider Foundation Chief Executive Officer. "By informing people about the often dirty and wasteful journey water takes as it travels from our homes back to the ocean, I hope they'll want to embrace small changes that can have a massive positive impact for the Earth. It's time to pledge to make every drop count."
"As the company that first brought showering to Americans in 1869, we are proud and excited to partner with Surfrider," said Speakman Vice President of Product and Marketing Kristin Barclay. "Creating the best shower possible means having a deep and fundamental respect for water—which makes our shared commitment to preserving the planet's water supplies, oceans, and beaches absolutely vital. At Speakman, we have a collective obsession with enjoying and preserving the world's most precious natural resource, and together with Surfrider, are thrilled to apply our innovation and dedication to save a billion gallons of water in 2016."
Clean water is a resource most people take for granted with daily habits that waste and pollute this valuable resource. As a nation experiencing longer periods of drought and extreme weather events, we must only use what we need and keep an eye out for leaks and water wasters. By making simple changes to our daily water habits—reducing, reusing and recycling water—everyone can play a role in maintaining safe and reliable water sources, while restoring and protecting our coasts and ocean.
Here are 5 simple tips for conserving water every day:
- Keep showers to 5 minutes or less and limit baths.
- Install low-flow toilets and showerheads (like Speakman Reaction shower head).
- Fix any leaky plumbing. A single leaky toilet can waste as much as 200 gallons of water per day.
- Use trashcans for disposing of trash, not toilets.
- Don't waste water outdoors. Make your yard Ocean Friendly.
By changing our water habits, we can all protect local water supplies and keep pollution from reaching our ocean. To take the pledge during World Water Month to Skip Your Shower, click here.
